When buying a new mattress, there is plenty to consider, from comfort and support to construction and price. But before comparing these features, one of the most important decisions is choosing the right mattress size. For many shoppers, that means deciding between a Queen and King. Your bedroom dimensions, sleeping arrangements, personal space preferences and budget can all influence which size will work best for you. Understanding the differences before you buy can make the decision much easier. This guide compares King and Queen mattress sizes, explains the practical advantages of each and explores Sealy India's larger size options to help you choose a mattress that suits both your sleep and your space. |

What is the difference between a King and Queen bed?
The main difference between a King size and Queen size bed is width. A standard Sealy Queen mattress measures 78 x 60 inches (198 x 152 cm), while a standard Sealy King measures 78 x 72 inches (198 x 183 cm). Both are the same length, but the King provides an additional 12 inches of width.
That difference becomes particularly significant when two people share the mattress. On a Queen, two sleepers have approximately 30 inches of mattress width each. A King increases this to around 36 inches each. Ultimately, a King provides more sleeping space, while a Queen takes up less floor area and can be easier to accommodate in a smaller bedroom.
It should be noted that at Sealy, we offer variations in Queen and King sizes, so you can customise the length of a Queen or King to suit you. For more information, please see our Mattress Size Guide.

Beyond King: Sealy's larger mattress sizes
Queen and King are not your only options. Sealy India offers several larger mattress sizes, giving you more flexibility if you have a spacious bedroom or particular size requirements.
The Italian King measures 78.7 x 70.9 inches (200 x 180 cm). It provides substantially more width than a Queen while being slightly narrower than Sealy's standard King, making it a good option for couples looking for a generous sleep surface in a smaller bedroom.
The California King increases both length and width to 80 x 76 inches (203 x 193 cm). Its additional length can be particularly useful for taller sleepers, while the extra width provides more personal space for couples.
The Super King measures 84 x 78 inches (213 x 198 cm), providing the most expansive standard sleep surface in the Sealy India size range. Its larger dimensions make it best suited to luxurious bedrooms where there is ample room around the bed.
Whatever the size name, compare the actual measurements before buying. Mattress dimensions can vary between manufacturers, and a King from one brand will not necessarily have identical dimensions to a King from another.
For rooms or bed frames that do not suit standard dimensions, Sealy can also accommodate most custom mattress size requests.
Which is better for couples?
Both King and Queen mattresses work well for couples, but the right one for you depends largely on how much space you need at night.
A Queen is a practical choice for couples who are comfortable sleeping relatively close together. At 60 inches wide, it provides enough room for two people while maintaining a fairly compact footprint.
Side sleepers tend to spread out more across the surface of the mattress, so if you or your partner sleep on your side or move position throughout the night, a King bed may be ideal. The extra 12 inches of width creates greater separation between sleepers, giving each person approximately six additional inches of personal space.
Think beyond your current circumstances too. If children sometimes climb into bed in the morning, or you expect your sleeping arrangements to change over the life of the mattress, additional space may prove worthwhile.
How much bedroom space do you need?
A Queen will generally be the more practical choice when floor space is limited. Sealy recommends a minimum room size of approximately 10 x 10 ft for a Queen, compared with 12 x 12 ft for a King, and even more space for the larger King sizes. These measurements are a useful starting point, but you should always measure your individual room before choosing a mattress.
Start with the available length and width where you intend to position the bed. Remember that the external dimensions of your bed frame will usually be larger than the mattress itself. We recommend leaving around 3 feet between the walls and your bed.
You should also allow enough room to:
- Walk comfortably around the bed
- Open wardrobes, drawers and bedroom doors
- Accommodate bedside tables
- Access both sides of the bed where required
This can make a Queen practical for apartments, guest rooms and compact bedrooms. In a spacious master bedroom, a King can make better use of the available floor area while providing a more generous sleep surface.
Choosing the largest mattress that physically fits is not always the best approach. Your bed should provide ample sleeping space without making the rest of the bedroom difficult to use.

Which is better for your budget?
A Queen will generally cost less than an equivalent King mattress because of its smaller size. However, the mattress itself is not the only cost to consider. Moving from a Queen to a King may also mean purchasing a larger bed frame, mattress protector, sheets, quilts and other bedding.
If your bedroom comfortably accommodates either size, consider how much you value the additional sleeping space. A mattress is a long-term purchase used every night, so the extra room of a King may be worthwhile for couples who prefer more personal space.
If you do not need that additional width, a Queen can provide a comfortable sleep surface while leaving more of your budget available for bedding accessories and bedroom furniture.
Queen or King: Which should you choose?
For most shoppers, the decision comes down to how you balance sleeping space against bedroom space.
- Choose a Queen if: you want a comfortable mattress for one or two people while conserving floor space. It is particularly well suited to apartments, guest bedrooms and couples who do not require substantial personal sleeping space.
- Choose a King if: you have a larger bedroom and value extra room to stretch out. The additional width can be particularly useful for couples who move during sleep, prefer more personal space or occasionally share their bed with children.
If your room allows for something larger, compare Sealy's Italian King, California King and Super King options before making your final choice.
Whichever option you choose, measure your room and bed frame first. The right mattress size should provide the sleeping space you need while leaving your bedroom comfortable and functional.
