How to Test a Mattress In-Store Before You Buy

Buying a new mattress can feel confusing with so many brands, materials, and comfort levels to choose from. Knowing how to properly test a mattress in-store can save you time and help you make a smart purchase. Here’s a simple guide to help you prepare before visiting a store and what to do once you’re there.

Before You Visit the Store

1. Shortlist a Few Options First
With so many mattress types—foam, spring, hybrid, and orthopaedic—it’s easy to get lost in the options. Instead of starting your search in-store, shortlist a few models or comfort levels you’re interested in. This helps you stay focused and makes comparing mattresses much easier.

2. Make a Note of Sizes and Comfort Preferences
Before shopping, measure your bed frame or room space to decide on the correct mattress size. Measure your room size and determine approximately how big you would like your mattress to be.  Have a think about your preferred firmness level (soft, medium, or firm), depending on your sleeping position and back support needs.

3. Research a Bit Online
Reading reviews or comparing features online can give you a sense of what to expect and help you ask the right questions once you’re in the store. But don't worry if you dont have the time, our in-store staff will be able to advice you and help you with any concerns you might have.

Trying mattresses instore:

1. Get Comfortable While Testing

Trying out a mattress in-store isn’t just about lying down for a few seconds. It’s about recreating your usual sleep environment as closely as possible. Make sure you feel comfortable enough to move around and rest the way you normally would at home.

Wear loose, breathable clothing that lets you change positions easily. If you’re buying a mattress with your partner, visit the store together so you can both test how it feels when you share the bed.

You can also carry your own pillow. Sometimes, sleep discomfort or back pain is caused by the pillow, not the mattress. Using your regular pillow in-store helps you test how well your mattress and pillow work together to support your head, neck, and spine.

Take Your Time Testing

The best way to find the right mattress is to test it patiently and thoroughly. If you’ve already shortlisted a few models or comfort levels, testing becomes much easier.

Spend around 10 to 15 minutes lying on each mattress in your normal sleeping position, whether that’s on your back, side, or stomach. Don’t rush this step, as your mattress will be with you for years.

Pay attention to how your back, hips, and shoulders feel. You should feel supported and relaxed, not strained or tense. The right mattress will feel comfortable, keep your body aligned, and help you wake up refreshed

2. Reach out to the experts

When you visit any of the Sealy Boutique stores, our staff members are eager to help you find your perfect match. They are knowledgeable about the various mattress specifications and how each one suits different sleepers. Having a chat with them will allow you to figure out which is your perfect match.
